The Department of Arts and Culture, Ko Pitseng Productions and Victory Theatre proudly present Azikhwelwa a musical production based on the 1950’s Alexandra Bus Boycott. The musical focuses on how residents participated and were affected by the boycott.  It captures dialogues and debates between political figures from varying organizations, jazz lovers, journalists and the soft sides of human beings caught in the milieu of poverty, hope and courage.

Directed by Lindani O. Nkosi and written by Reshoketswe Maredi, the musical features a bevy of talented and seasoned South African television and stage actors including Seputla Sebogodi (formerly Generations and veteran stage actor); Mpho Molepo (Rhythm City television star); Mduduzi (Rhythm City); Mampondo (seasoned stage & television actor); Clement (television and stage actor);  Diaketseng Mnisi, a veteran stage and television actor, Phumla Siyobi, a singer and a budding actor from Alex and Lerato (formerly from UMOJA) with music by Alex jazz veterans and some UMOJA band members.

The show also serves as a prelude to the 100 year celebrations of Alexandra Township.  It brings to life the camaraderie, courage and hope of the community which ultimately led to victory against the one penny fare increase. The media showcase will be followed by a keynote address by Ministry of Arts and Culture.
