Deputy Minister Joe Phaahla to give the keynote address at the Oral History Conference

Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Joe Phaahla will deliver the keynote address on the 8th October 2012 at the opening of the 9th Oral History Conference in Thaba Nchu, Free State. The theme of the conference is “Oral history, communities and the liberation struggle: reflective memories in post-apartheid South Africa

The National Archives, an institution of the Department of Arts and Culture was mandated in 2000 to conceptualise and implement a National Oral History Programme. A panel of experts was constituted and developed a concept document which became the guide for the implementation of the programme. In 2005, the Oral History Association of South Africa (OHASA) was established and has been hosting annual conferences in different provinces. The purpose of the conference is to share knowledge, identify projects conducted by different institution and building a cohesive national society.

This Conference is being hosted by the Department of Arts, Culture and Recreation in conjunction with the National Department of Arts and Culture. The purpose of Oral History is to address issues and matters which are not recorded or captured or preserved as expected. It also raises an awareness of the role of memory which was important for transferring knowledge in earlier periods.
