Layla Fourie on its recent win Minister Mashatile congratulates South African film “Layla Fat Berlinale International Film Festival



Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr. Paul Mashatile sends his congratulations to the filmmaker, cast and the South African production companies, involved in the making of Layla Fourie, a film which recently secured an award at the prestigious, Berlinale International Film Festival.
Layla Fourie, is a feature film by Berlin-based, South African filmmaker, Pia Marais.
It played in Main Competition at the Berlinale International Film Festival, where it won a JURY SPECIAL MENTION AWARD, last weekend.
"We are proud of this achievement. South Africa has so many stories to share with the world, we are encouraged that our creative talents, both film makers and actors in this case, are giving voice to these tales and doing so to such acclaim," said Mashatile.
This multi-country co-production, led by prolific German producer, Pandora Film Produktion, is co-produced by Dv8 Films and Spier Films of South Africa.
"Through the National Film and Video Foundation and as we implement the Mzansi Golden Economy strategy, we will continue to strengthen the support we are offering to local film productions; ensuring that more of our stories are shared with local and international audiences. Its through these efforts that we hope to create more jobs, and enhance skills within this crucial sector," Mashatile added.
It is only the second time that a South African film featured in Main Competition.
uCarmen eKhayalitsha was the first South African production to be shown at this event.
Jeremy Nathan of Dv8 said,"this is wonderful recognition for the film and the team. It was great just being in Main Competition, and we hope the award will help promote the film."
Mike Auret of Spier Films said, "it is wonderful news that such a unique South African story has been recognised at the highest level and we congratulate Pia Marais, Pandora and particularly Dv8 for their excellent work in achieving this. Spier Films was happy to play its role in the making of this film and delighted that it could be part of another film to win honours at this prestigious festival".
Layla Fourie stars South African actors Terry Norton, Rapulana Seiphemo and debuts 9 year old Rapule Hendricks. It also features German actor, August Diehl, who starred in SALT and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.
Layla Fourie is due for release in South Africa in July 2013.
