Minister Nathi Mthethwa to attend the funeral of National Order Recipient and award-winning Thespian, Dr Winston Ntshona on Friday in Port Elizabeth, Mandela Bay Municipality
Members of the press are hereby advised that the Minister of Arts and Culture Mr Nathi Mthethwa will be attending the funeral of the late National Order Recipient and Award-winning Thespian Dr Winston Ntshona on Friday 10 August 2018 in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth.
Theatre and film legend, Dr Ntshona passed away at the age of 76 in Port Elizabeth last week.
“The deaths of great women men force us to pause, and observe that indeed, as the South African adage goes, ‘Umth’omkhulu uwile’/’A great tree has fallen’. Dr Winston Ntshona belonged to the esteemed group of expert purveyors of the Arts and Culture sector that the Department of Arts and Culture identifies as “Living Legends”. It was in August 2015 that the Department of Arts and Culture announced the Legends “Living Legacy Programme”, an initiative that seeks to honour the living legends of the arts, culture and heritage sector, document their contribution and provide opportunities for interaction and imparting skills to younger generations of artists.
Dr Winston Ntshona belonged to this venerable and honourable group of individuals. It is fitting therefore that I forego all other standing commitments to go be with the community of New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, South Africa, and those that deeply respected and loved him throughout the global community at large, and by their side, “…ndigxwale emswaneni” and mourn the passing from this earthly realm this tremendous force of an individual that defined (and will forever define…) the finest of South Africa and Africa’s artistic exploits.”
- Hon Nathi Mthethwa
