The Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, joins the rest of the nation in congratulating Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club for their ground-breaking victory of the maiden edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League Final.

Popularly known as “Banyana ba Style”, Mamelodi Sundowns took on Hasaacas Ladies from Ghana in the finals of the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League at the 30th June Stadium in Cairo, demonstrating once more a South African can-do attitude.

Minister Mthethwa, elated at this historic win, said “This historic feat by Mamelodi Sundowns signals a welcomed turning point in the history of women’s football for our country. My good wishes to Mamelodi Sundowns for this emphatic announcement of South Africa’s arrival at the top end of the women’s version of continental football. Theirs will unquestionably be a tough act to follow.”

Mamelodi Sundowns’ goals were scored by both Chuene Morifi and Andisiwe Mgcoyi, ending the match 2-0 despite finalizing the match with one player short. The Sundowns team got into the finals after playing four matches without conceding a goal.

“We look forward to welcoming our champions home on their return home. And thank you to Banyana ba Style for a victory that is set to inject much-needed boost into women’s football in our country.” concluded Minister Mthethwa.
