President Zuma to unveil a 9 metre bronze statue of the late former President Nelson Mandela

President Jacob Zuma will unveil a 9 metre bronze statue of the late, former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela as part of the Day of Reconciliation Celebrations which is hosted annually on 16 December at the Union Buildings, Pretoria. The day also marks the commemoration of the centenary of the Union Buildings, one of the most iconic structures in South Africa.
The unveiling of the statue on 16 December 2013 is intended as acknowledgement of the contribution of the first President of a democratic South Africa, a symbol of national reconciliation and unity. Hopefully it will become a site of pilgrimage for domestic and international visitors.
The installation of Tata Madiba’s statue at the Union Buildings is part of the Department of Arts and Culture’s ongoing work to develop new symbols and monuments that reflect our collective aspirations as South Africans and the new values we stand for.
Let us work together in honour of Tata Madiba to promote NATION BUILDING, SOCIAL COHESION AND RECONCILIATION.
