Reflection of Day 1 (6th April 2021): Experts’ discussion and development of the declaration on Sites of Memory
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this public announcement and introduction of the NWC2023 Board.
As you may know, Netball South Africa, around June 2018, in their desire to grow the sport, in the country, as well as acknowledge the quality of their players, decided to bid to host the 2023 Netball World Cup.
In bidding for the Netball World Cup, we firmly believed that hosting the Netball World Cup will create an environment for peak performances from the games’ finest players and provide them with a uniquely African and particularly South African experience.
Our track record of hosting premier global sporting events is unparallel. We want to host the most inspirational tournament in Netball World Cup history.
The Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Nocawe Mafu congratulates the SPAR Proteas National Netball team for winning the SPAR Challenge Tri Nations netball series which took place between South Africa, Uganda and Namibia at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 25th to 31st March 2021. The SPAR Proteas secured the trophy and ensured that it remains home after beating Uganda 44 – 32 in the last match of the Tri Nations series. All teams faced each other three times during the series and our girls won all six of their matches. Congratulations and well done to Captain, Bongi Msomi and her team for their unbeaten run in the series.

On Tuesday 30 March, the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture hosted a joint meeting with the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Members Council and the CSA Interim Board to try and assist them to map a way forward in adopting a new Memorandum of Incorporation to replace the one that has been identified as an obstacle to good governance within cricket.
This meeting was held against the backdrop of the envisaged Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for 17 April 2021. This is where a final report on the nine points contained in the Minister’s mandate to the Interim Board is expected to be tabled.
Despite clarification on some misinterpretations and being provided with cricket best practice elsewhere in the world, the Members Council still clung to the 2013 CSA stance of “cricket needing to be run by cricket people”.
