“It is with deep shock & regret that the Ministry has learnt of the brutal slaying of Taliep Peterson, a noted musician from Cape Town. Of course we are horrified that this brutal crime happened at his home at a time when peace and goodwill prevails throughout the land. This ugly deed has robbed the country of one of the most talented musicians from the southern tip of the African continent,
Peterson was an outstanding creative personality who has worked closely with David Kramer, among others to produce work that have contributed to nation building, self-pride among South Africans and nourished the world’s hunger for soul satisfying artistic productions from the African continent. Some of the work he played a pivotal role in include Fairyland, Cat and the Kings, and Ghoema which is at present said to be touring the United Kingdom.
Although details are sketchy, we learn that Peterson was murdered during attempted robbery at his Athlone home. Violent crime is the bane of any society, but the brutal murder of any artist especially of the caliber of Peterson, is a monumental loss to a nation. We take this opportunity to offer condolences to the Peterson Family, relatives, friends and the artistic community. May his soul rest in peace, “ Dr. Z. Pallo Jordan, Minister of Arts & Culture.
