President Kgalema Motlanthe to address Freedom Day Celebrations in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province

23 April 2009

In celebration of our resilience and maturing democracy, President Kgalema Motlanthe will on Monday, 27 April 2009 address the Freedom Day Celebrations at the Absa Stadium, Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal Province.

This year’s Freedom Day celebrations will take place under the theme: Together celebrating a vibrant democracy and building a better life for all. The theme invokes a spirit of hope and resilience. It is also a call to all South Africans to be proud of our vibrant democracy. It communicates a message to our people, that together we must build our nation and take advantage of the benefits and opportunities created by democracy so that we fully realize our vision to create a better life for all.

President Motlanthe will be accompanied by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Dr Z. Pallo Jordan and other senior government officials.

For the past 15 years, South Africa has celebrated the achievement of freedom and democracy on 27 April - a day on which the first democratic elections were held in 1994.

The 2009 Freedom Day Celebrations presents an opportunity for our country to pay tribute to our heroes and heroines who contributed to the fight for freedom and the building of a non-racial, non-sexist and democracy.

Most importantly, the 2009 Freedom Day Celebrations takes place soon after the fourth general elections where millions of South Africans have exercised their hard-won right to vote.

In addition to the national celebrations, the other provinces will host their own events and cultural performances.

Government hopes that this year’s Freedom Day Celebrations will renew our commitment towards building a non-racial, non-sexist, prosperous and democratic society.

Pre-accreditation will take place from 24-26 April 2009 between 9:00 and 11:00 at the City Hall in Durban.
