The DAC to present a programme of Cultural events at the 2012 London Olympics games

26 Jul 2012

The South African government through the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) in collaboration with DAC institutions the South African State Theatre, Ditsong Museums and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) is hosting a celebration of South African arts, culture and heritage during the upcoming 2012 London Olympic games in a programme that begins on the 26th July 2012 and runs until the end of the multisport showpiece.

A diverse and stellar line-up which includes live performances, fashion, film, visual arts, crafts and more will put emphasis on the theme: “A retrospective of South African Arts and Culture” following SA’s centenary year focus during 2012 to draw the global community and South Africans alike to the “Ekhaya Village” - home away from home for South Africa, situated in the heart of London at the South Bank centre as part of the promotion of Mzansi’s Golden Economy. Aimed at presenting a South African cultural statement interlocked with the imaging of South Africa as a country that is “inspiring new ways”, the London Olympics cultural programme endeavours to enhance SA’s potential to creating opportunities for tourism, export and business investment. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to showcase the wealth of talent possessed by South Africans and reflect the rich South African culture, history and identity to a wide global audience.

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile will be present to officially open the Cultural programme on the 26th July 2012.
