This year’s Heritage Month celebrations in the month of September are dedicated to commemorating our Liberation Heritage. It is a year in which homage is paid to all heroes and heroines who played a pivotal role in the emancipation of South African society. Liberation Heritage evolves around the preservation, conservation, promotion and sustenance of the history, cultures and traditions of the monumental struggle against all forms of oppression, injustice and widespread inequality.

The theme “Celebrating Heroes and Heroines of the Liberation Struggle in South Africa” means that this year’s tribute serves as a measurement device of how far we have come in terms of achieving freedom, independence, self-reliance and self-determination from the shackles of political, economic and socio-cultural enslavement.

The build-up activities of the 2011 Heritage Month celebrations comprises of events that will run simultaneously during September and beyond and will take place in all nine provinces of South Africa. The crux of the matter is to encourage participation by all sectors of the South Africa society, ensuring that we all take a step forward - and in the right direction - for the ultimate attainment of nation-building, social cohesion and forging a non-racial and non-sexist society.

This year’s main event will take place in the Mpumalanga Province on 24 September 2011 at a venue to be confirmed.
