Promotion, commemoration and popularisation: this month is poised to be one of the busiest for the Department of Arts and Culture when it hosts three separate events in three different provinces between 11 and 19 October. They include the 8th National Oral History Conference, the 5th IBSA Summit as well as the 25th Commemoration of the Samora Machel tragedy.

The first to take place will be the 8th National Oral History conference which will take place in the North West Province from 11 to 14 October. The theme is Past Distortions, Present Realities; (Re)Construction(S) and (Re)Configuration(S) of Oral History. The Conference is aimed at promoting the use of Oral History as a research methodology and publicise the National Archives' drive to augment archival records to close the gaps in the archival collections created by the Apartheid regime.

 

The second major event will be the the 25th Commemoration of the Samora Machel tragedy which will take place in the Mpumalanga Province and Mozambique, respectively from 17 to 19 October. The commemoration is a bilateral and inter-governmental project between the two countries. It comprises of two legs: the first will take place on 17 October in Mbuzini, Mpumalanga Province to be followed by the second which will be held in the Matola District in Mozambique on 19 October. 8th NATIONAL ORAL
HISTORY CONFERENCE


One of the major conferences to take place this month is the 8th Annual National Oral History Conference, to be hosted under the auspices of the The National Archives and Records Service of South Africa, a branch of the DAC. This historic event will take place at Mmabatho Palm Hotel in Mahikeng, North West Province from 11 to 14 October 2011.

In an important development, the conference will provide a platform to some learners who were trained in conducting Family Tree research to present their own findings. They were part of a group of 30. These learners will share a platform with winners of the Chief Albert Luthuli Young Historians who will present papers and share with other learners from the Province... read more here

Fraud and corruption deprive too many people of their basic rights (housing, education, elderly support grants etc). It defeats Government's aim to create a better life for South Africans. It is therefore our duty as those entrusted with the responsibility of service delivery to ensure the reporting of those individuals relying on it for their existence.
