Arts, Social Development and Youth Programmes and Projects
 

1. Arts Education & Training

Collaboration between DAC & DoE on strategic programmes
Artists in schools and in CAC
Project: Curriculum Development Project / WSoA partnership. The project is to be implemented in nine all Provinces.
Project: SA/Flemish project. Three provinces have been identified as the target beneficiaries, viz, Limpopo, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Free State.

2. Arts Access

DAC in conjunction with the Department of Correctional Services launched the Arts In Prisons [AIP] programme in Kroonstadt prison in March 2005.
This is part of a broader programme which includes all marginalised sectors of society such as the disabled and prisoners etc to have access to the arts.
The AIP programme seeks to make a contribution towards the rehabilitation of offenders.

3. Youth Expressions Campaign

Concern with the civic health of the youth
Creating awareness regarding the challenges facing youth addressing the social forces and mega international trends through dialogue and debate
Developing a common identity, using youth programmes as a vehicle to create civic consciousness.

4. Women And Gender

Mosadi wa Konokono [woman of substance]
The Project was initiated by DAC in August 2003
It is aimed at celebrating and acknowledging the vital role played by women in South Africa
The objective of the project is to address moral regeneration of the society by building self-esteem and providing role models for the youth.
To encourage the youth to take an active role in their development and communities
It is aimed at recognizing the contribution of women in society
A competition was launched by the Deputy Minister on the 9th off August 2003.
The competition is open to all youth between the ages of 13 – 35.
The Deputy Minister will award women and youth who produce inspiring, artistic and educational message to the public regarding Mosadi wa Konokono
Role of provincial departments in the Mosadi wa konokono project is to run the project in the provinces.
And to identify a department official in the provinces who will work with the national department in the implementation of the various projects

6. Field Band Foundation

The Field Band Foundation [FBF] is a NPO dealing with the underprivileged youth of south Africa, reaching the youth through music and building self-esteem and developing life skills.
The FBF started in 1997 and has grown from 600 youngsters to 3000 youngsters in 2005.
These youth come from 244 schools in 129 townships across the country
The programme is designed to give youth in disadvantaged communities basic like skills
Create employment opportunities [the band is paid for their performances]
Develop talent of youth [ learn music notation at weekly classes]
There is also a HIV/AIDS peer educators programme
Peer educators [aged 12-25] are trained in the bands to to talk to other band members and also the community about HIV/AIDS
Scholarships are identified for deserving members to study with formal education institutions.
The DAC has seen an opportunity of re-enforcing the social cohesion strategy of government through a partnership with the foundation
The foundation has regional coordinators in all the nine provinces. They could be linked up with the Provincial Coordinators in the Community Arts Centres [CAC]
DAC will take the lead in popularising the FBF as a mass participation event.
The opportunity to make the arts accessible to all is availed through the attraction of a large number of youth
The department’s role would be to facilitate the exposure of youth to various genres of the arts.
