1. Structure |
The NLS has four main sections:
• Translation and Editing (with two subdivisions: African Languages, and English, Afrikaans and Foreign Languages)
• Terminology Coordination
• Language Planning (with two subdivisions: Language Policy Development and Language Policy Implementation)
• Human Language Technologies

| 2. Vision and Mission |
| Vision
To promote multilingualism by ensuring that all eleven official languages enjoy equitable treatment, development and protection.
Mission
To meet the language requirements of the Constitution and the varied language needs of the people of this country and to provide a language facilitation and advisory service to promote better communication and governance by means of translation, editing, terminology development, human language technologies, language planning, literature development and promotion, interpreting and language research and development centres.

| 3. Projects |
• South African Language Practitioners’ Council (SALPC): Establish a regulatory body to register and accredit language practitioners in South Africa
• Literature development and promotion: Develop and promote literature in the previously disadvantaged languages of South Africa
• Telephone Interpreting Service for South Africa (TISSA): Provide a professional interpreting service between government services and the public in all the official languages of the country.
• LRDCs: Decentralize the development of the indigenous languages, and ensure the involvement and participation of communities in the process.
• Language Bursary Scheme: Build capacity by awarding bursaries to students pursuing studies in African languages in the fields of human language technologies, translation and editing, terminology management, language planning and interpreting.
• Human Language Technologies (HLT): Finalise the HLT National Strategy, which outlines broad policy direction and coordination strategies for HLT industry in South Africa.
• Translation and Editing: Provide a translation and editing service in the official languages and all foreign languages to the following clients:
Parliament
National government departments, including the Presidency
Public entities
Statutory/constitutional bodies
Provincial government departments (where needed)
Embassies
• Terminology Development: Develop terminology in the fields of HIV/AIDS and Human Economics, Management and Social Sciences |
