The founding father of our nation, Tata Madiba, once said:“We were expected to destroy one another and ourselves collectively in the worst racial conflagration. Instead, we as a people chose the path of negotiation, compromise and peaceful settlement. Instead of hatred and revenge we chose reconciliation and nation-building.”

The 3rd of December has been designated by the UN to be commemorated annually as the International Day of persons with disabilities to promote awareness and mobilise support for critical issues relating to the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society and development.

Allow me from the onset to express my gratitude to the Founder and President of the Leading Women of Africa, Ms Madeleine Mkunu, for extending an invitation to me to be part of this prestigious occasion.

These are the words spoken by the first African Woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, the late Wangari Maathai.
