The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) was established in terms of the Pan South African Language Board Act, 1995 (Act No. 59 of 1995) ("the Act"). The objects of PanSALB are to monitor and evaluate the implementation of multilingualism and promote and develop previously marginalised languages.

On behalf of the Minister of Arts and Culture and the Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture, the ad-hoc committee appointed in terms of section 5(3)(a) of the Act hereby calls on members of the language fraternity and the general public to nominate persons to serve as members of the PanSALB Board for a term of five years.

Nominees should be fit and proper persons for the offices held by them, and be South African citizens. They must have a broad understanding of and experience in the field of language, be broadly representative of the diversity of the speakers of official languages, and support the principle of multilingualism. Nominees must possess language skills that include but are not limited to: interpreting, translation, terminology development and lexicography, language literacy teaching, and language planning. Nominations are also encouraged of persons with legal expertise, expertise in financial management or corporate governance, or in any other matter that will allow the Board to fulfil its obligations.

Anyone wishing to nominate persons to serve on the PanSALB Board should submit the following documents to the ad-hoc committee (contact details below):

  1. A letter containing the full names, addresses and telephone numbers of the nominator and the nominee, stating the reasons for the nomination;
  2. A recently updated curriculum vitae of the nominee, including the names and contact details of three referees;
  3. A brief statement, signed by the nominee, explaining his/her suitability for appointment and indicating his/her acceptance of the nomination.

Closing date for nominations: 21 October 2018

Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates.
