Premier Sihle Zikalala to lead the Commemoration of the Signing of the Constitution in KZN
The KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Mr. Sihle Zikalala together with the provincial MEC for Arts and Culture, Ms. Hlengiwe Mavimbela will on Thursday, 10 December 2020 lead the 24th Commemoration of the signing of the Constitution, “Tracing the footsteps of Tata Nelson Mandela”, in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Constitution not only set the stage for South Africa’s first democratic elections, but was as the document itself explained “a historic bridge between the past of a deeply divided society characterised by strife, conflict, untold suffering and injustice, and a future founded on the recognition of human rights, democracy and peaceful coexistence and development opportunities for all South Africans, irrespective of colour, race, class, belief or sex”.
As part of this years’ commemoration, Premier and the MEC will visit the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick, followed by a walkabout at Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court, the courtroom where the late “Tata” Nelson Mandela first appeared. The journey will conclude at Ohlange High School in Inanda, where the main commemorative event will take place. Dignitaries are also expected to sign the symbolic pledge, thus recommitting to the Constitutional values and principles at Ohlange Primary School.
Nelson Mandela signed the Constitution into law in Sharpeville, in Vereeniging, on 10 December 1996, international Human Rights Day. The Constitution came into effect on 4 February 1997.
