We have met here today to mark the 150th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Indian indentured workers and the birth of the Indian community in South Africa.

On this important occasion, we wish to reiterate once more that; the South African Indian community, whose fore-fathers came from India to work as indentured labourers, 150 years ago, are today as South African as any other citizen of our country.

Thank you for inviting us to speak at this important International Forum on Cultural Heritage and Landscape.
This Forum, which is aimed at deepening our understanding of the role arts, culture and heritage can play in advancing the development of societies, is taking place in the City of Florence, itself a place with an immense cultural and artistic heritage expressed in its numerous churches, palaces, art galleries, museums, villages and piazzas.

By subscribing to the popular liberation movement in our country large sections of the traditional leadership chose the agenda which represented the genuine interests of the majority of South Africans
We have met here today to witness the unveiling of the beautiful paintings by Ndebele women from South Africa on the walls of the Nelson Mandela Forum building.
This act of painting the walls of the Nelson Mandela Forum using patterns by Ndebele artists, whose work combines tradition and artistic innovation and is in many ways symbolic of the “rainbow nation” that South Africa has become, signifies this place as a meeting point of cultures.
Though the death of Hotep Galeta last week left us shocked and saddened, and will remain a deep loss on many levels to all of us, I think that as we bid him farewell we should remember that he would not have wanted us to remain paralyzed by it. He would have preferred that we celebrate his life.

On the 24th of November this year, the South African government in partnership with the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Chief Albert Luthuli Foundation will host the 4th Chief Albert Luthuli Memorial Lecture.
